Hinkley Point C
On the North coast of Somerset, located by the Bristol channel, is one of the largest construction sites in the UK. Hinkley Point C is a new Nuclear Power station that, when it comes online, will power approximately 6 million homes.
The construction effort is on the scale of HS2, costing Billions of pounds and employing some of the most cutting-edge techniques and science to assist the UK in achieving its Net Zero goal.
To achieve this mammoth project, teams of up to 10,000 staff work three shifts daily on site to ensure timely delivery. However, with so many workers on site and the risks involved in the heavy engineering sector, the project has strict emergency procedures to ensure the safety of its staff.
These standards are subject to outside independent scrutiny on occasion to ensure that on-site risk mitigation measures remain sufficient, relevant and have the capacity to scale up or down depending on demand.
Independent emergency procedure assessment
Sceptre and its partners were asked to independently assess some of these emergency procedures concerning construction. It should be noted that none of this work involved any nuclear issue, the site is not live, and no fuel is currently on site.
After the Hinley Point C team’s comprehensive safety and remit briefing, our assessor was set to work. This involved examining the overarching safety policy for the site construction and how, why, and in what quantity staff would need protection.
Our assessor then conducted a two-day on-site assessment before work on the audit report could commence. During the report writing, we were in regular contact with the team at Hinkley, who were highly supportive and made all relevant documents and details available.
Once completed, our findings were presented to the client, who scrutinised the report in the finest detail before accepting its results.
The independent report we submitted confirmed that the relevant emergency procedures in place on site far exceeded those required to ensure the safety of their staff during specific scenarios.
