Security management for large-scale recent film title launch
While North America and Western Europe already have well established facilities for hosting top media events, there are other parts of the world that are catching up fast. One of these is the largest city in Turkey – Istanbul. Straddling Europe and Asia on the Bosphorus Strait, and forming the gateway to the Black Sea, Istanbul comprises a unique blend of cultures, ancient and modern. As such, the city presents a particular challenge for organisations tasked with delivering safe events.
Sceptre Protection were asked to support a recent film title launch in Istanbul that came with all the trappings: a huge media presence, the movie screening and the after-show party, attended by the cream of Turkish society. There were also hundreds of other guests and contractors to manage in safety -- and this is how we went about it.
The first order of business was to understand precisely what the event organisers wanted to achieve at the launch and, second, to establish any possible risks. For this, Sceptre accessed multiple sources to identify the most likely threats and their intentions and capabilities. We then had to consider the effects of advance notice of the event and whether leaks on social media might add to threat levels.
A site visit was arranged for Sceptre to see at first hand what security measures were already in place and what extra capabilities could be called upon. All the established data was then examined to determine overall risk, at which point we were able to recommend a proportionate level of security using local assets.
We then met with the event organisers to explain the security plan, to establish how it would impact the event, where there was room for any flexibility and finally, of course, the cost of the package. Agreement was quickly achieved, thanks to Sceptre’s unrivalled experience in security planning, and we were on site a few days before the event to meet management and vendors and to explain contingencies and individual role responsibilities.
The event itself was a huge success, with many fans unexpectedly turning up hoping to see their idols, thanks to a leak of information by a third party! It didn’t matter, however, as this eventuality had been anticipated in the security plan and the crowds were safely managed. A minor medical incident was similarly managed without problems. The screening and after-show party passed successfully and the VIPs were escorted to their vehicles afterwards through contingency exits already earmarked to bypass the crowds.
