CEO Personal Security
The murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Health Care in the US, back in December 2024, sent shock waves through not just the medical insurance industry but others too. Many companies have rightly decided to review how they protect their most senior staff in potentially controversial sectors.
Sceptre was recently contracted to review the personal security of a high-profile CEO in a highly successful global organisation.
Research and control measures
It began by researching the threat background, the geopolitical status of the various countries they resided in, and the crime rates around their homes to establish the likely threat to that person and their family. Once we had that data, it was necessary to examine what control measures they had in place, such as their movement predictability, Executive protection staff, transport options, and commercial and domestic physical security reviews. All this research allowed us to establish the likely risk to that person and their family.
With the client’s assistance, we then established an asset criticality table. Effectively, this tells us what the critical assets are. In just about every case, the protection of the family is the top priority. The priorities that follow can be anything from data protection to art collections, vehicles, wine cellars, Jewellery, etc. The table then moves down to High, Medium, and Low priorities.
When we know the risk and the impact the loss of a specific asset would have, we review the current control measures to determine if they are sufficient or require changing to mitigate the current risk and provide adequate asset protection.
In this case, much of the attention was required to be focused on the domestic residences. Significant investment in security measures had been made in the past, and much of the security infrastructure was high-end; however, there were glaring vulnerabilities exposed.
For example, the perimeter was protected up until a certain point. Still, outbuildings had been located by walls blocking CCTV, bypassing Perimeter Intrusion detection systems (PIDS) and providing a climbing opportunity for the adversary to gain access to the rear of the house undetected. Likewise, at the house, some locks were insufficient to prevent even a mild attack.
Proportionate security recommendations
After an exhaustive review of the properties, it was necessary to meet the client again to provide them with the extensive report and discuss the findings. Clients usually expect bad news and anticipate recommendations that would be expensive and inconvenient to implement. However, often it is just a case of highlighting vulnerabilities and making recommendations to eliminate those vulnerabilities. This can be an additional rated lock on a front door, an additional panic button, the redirection of a CCTV camera, ensuring the CCTV video analytics are triggered on a boundary breach, or a change in routine, travelling to and from work. The recommendations need to be proportionate to the risk and focused on protecting those critical assets. Investing in more security that isn’t proportionate or focused on those critical assets will eventually provide diminishing returns in terms of protection provided for the money invested.
The result of this review is that all the recommendations were accepted in full, and the necessary changes are currently being made.
